Have you always dreamed of starting your own business and becoming your own boss? But you just don’t know where to start? Think of your favorite fast food restaurant, what comes to mind? Is it the taste of the salty fries? Is it the color of the logo? Or, the commercial of the mouthwatering food you see time and time again? When you think of all of these things, you’re thinking of the companies’ brand as a whole.

A company needs a strong brand to be successful. A brand is really just an idea or image that people have in mind when thinking about specific products or services. It is a strategy that is designed by companies to help people identify their product or organization from their competitors. It gives people a reason to choose you over someone else. For example, when I had you think of a fast food restaurant above, did you pick McDonald’s or Burger King? Which brand stuck out to you in your mind? A brand is not just a physical feature, it is also the feelings that consumers develop toward a company. If you choose McDonald’s, maybe it is because you love the way their fries taste, or their Big Mac. Maybe you choose Burger King because you love their chicken nuggets and milkshakes. Whichever restaurant you choose, it was because you had a personal feeling about that company and their products.

For a better definition of branding, I much prefer this quote from Amazon’s CEO, Jeff Bezos: “Your brand is what people say about you when you’re not in the room.” And to me this sums up branding perfectly. Branding is how people perceive your company or your brand. It describes your company as a whole, as to your what, your how, and your why.

When you look at some of the biggest brands in the world, you will notice that their branding is well thought out and calculated to help them be the successful company that they are.

When starting a business ask yourself these questions.

  1. What does your business do?
  2. Who are your customers?
  3. Who are your competitors?
  4. What do you deliver to your customers, both functionally and emotionally?
  5. What kind of personality will your brand have?

When you answer these questions, you will have the basic building blocks that are needed to create your brand.

In conclusion, branding is the heart and soul of your company. It is what you do, how you do it, and why you do it. What does branding mean to you? Share your thoughts on how you found your brand. We’d love to hear from you!
